Saltworks of Es Trenc

By | 18 April, 2016 | 2 comments

Singular space protected in Mallorca

When the Phoenicians inhabited the island, they harvested salt in the Majorcan area of Es Trenc. But it was not until 2003 that this marine gift became a commercial success, at which time Katja Wöhr and Robert Chaves began to harvest it by hand from the saltworks of the island, just as it was originally done in the French Atlantic coast.

Flor de Sal d’Es Trenc is purely natural and unrefined, giving plus de advantages for the health. When the chef Marc Fosh added flavors to the salt, like hibiscus, black olives, spices and herbs, it was sold the condition of gourmet. It actually is common condiment that makes the greatest chefs crazy.

The Salt

The sea salt is the biggest aliment that nature has created, due to the fact that collects the biggest concentrated of natural minerals existed, plus the exact measures that our cells need, it contains 84 trace elements that can be find in our organism.

The water that evaporates and give us the salt, contains so many nutrients due to the fact that the sea, for its nodular movements of millions years, has worn out all the minerals and stones that exists in the planet, and for this, are suspended in sea water.

The salt is the fruit of natural evaporation from the sea water that comes from the beach of Es Trenc and the crystallization is the result of four factors: the sun, the wind, the less humidity and the traditional salt techniques.

It is extracted by means of a system dating from the Neolithic and in which is based the evaporation of the water coming from the channeled water and through the horizontal platforms of the same ground. The method and the time in which the harvest precedes gives place to the different types of sea salt.

The actual production of salt is one of the 10.000 annual tons that are consumed almost entirely in Mallorca and for different uses such as decalcify the water, tan skins, elaborate sausages like the sobrasada, or like a condiment of table.

Salines d´Es Trenc

During many centuries, man and nature have modeled to the south of Mallorca, the dreamlike landscape of the Salines d’Es Trenc. An extensive circuit of rafts designed to increase the concentration of salt per liter of sea water.

Through a canal, the Mediterranean waters of the beach of Es Trenc, suitable for the natural manufacture of sodium chloride, nourish this paradise for birds, rare example of how human action can generate valuable and worthy ecosystems of protection. Stroll through this idyllic natural setting and learn about its history and the process of making sea salt is possible.

This same year, the Government of Mallorca has approved the project of Law of declaration of the Natural Maritime Parque of the Trenc-Salobrar of Campos.

This is one of the most virgin and best preserved coastal corners of the island of Mallorca. A protected area of great scenic and environmental value, which also includes two of the best beaches on the island: Es Trenc and Ses Covetes.

The site was declared Natural Area of Special Interest (ANEI) in 1984 and, at present, the Natural Park of Es Trenc-Salobrar includes different zones with different climatic and landscape conditions.

In first place, you can find the virgin arenal of further than three kilometers of length in which it is constituted the beach of Es Trenc. Next we find a dynamic ecosystem formed by different strips of dunes with vegetation adapted to the excess of wind, with herbs like the thistle, shrubs like the zamarrilla and trees like the pine, the sabina and the tamarind.

The extensive wetland of the Salobrar has a great ecological value and it scales up to 171 species of migratory and sedentary avifauna, culminating in the Salinas d’Es Trenc, an ethnographic and cultural attraction of great caliber.
