The great festival of the Patios of Cordoba is here!

From the 3rd to the 15th of May, you can enjoy the magical festival of the Patios, where the beauty of the typical houses of Cordoba is shown and shared with visitors at this time of the year.

It always happens in the first fortnight of May, the Festival de los Patios Cordobeses which is a World Heritage Site, and where every year, the owners of all the courtyards participating in the contest open their doors and visitors can contemplate the beauty of their flowers and enjoy the acicates in the courtyards.

Worthy of mention is the Palacio de Viana, located in the Plaza de Don Gome, which has twelve magnificent courtyards and a fantastic garden. The different species of flowers decorate and perfume every corner of the spacious museum. The last Marquise of Viana, Sofía de Lancaster, knew how to maintain the exquisite origins of this 14th century palace.

But you will also find many other courtyards that are free to enter, and you can follow the marked route to discover these authentic gems.

Another option to experience this festival are guided tours and experiences, always going hand in hand with someone who knows and lives the culture of the patios is one of the best ways to understand and appreciate it. Our recommendation for this is the Asociación Profesional de Informadores Turísticos (APIT).

It is important to know that this traditional festival has an Interpretation Centre of the Patios Festival, located in Trueque Cuatro which is a house-patio emblematic of the festive tradition of Cordoba, a place to spread that the Cordoba Patios Festival is the festival of a whole people, who live their patios, of a people who are expressing their identity over the centuries, it was created to show the valuation given by UNESCO in 2012 as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

But undoubtedly the magic lies in the streets of Cordoba, strolling, admiring and enjoying its rich gastronomy is another attraction to discover this fantastic Andalusian city.

The oldest courtyard in Cordoba is 2,000 years old

The origins of today’s courtyards can be traced back many centuries to the Roman civilisation. According to the writer in the aforementioned 464-page book, the oldest courtyard preserved in Cordoba, a model from which the current enclosures would evolve, is located under the dining room of Hospes Palacio del Bailio and is 2,000 years old.
